This is the first I've seen of any Muslim coming out against such attacks. It's about time some of the leaders of their faith are speaking out against acts such as these.
A pamphlet called "A Friendly Note From Your Muslim Neighbor..." from Paul Findley's, "Silent No More," which is featured on the website of Douglas County's Masjid As Siddiq, Islamic Center of West Georgia, says "Muslims are committed to rules. Sadly, some people who say they are Muslims - like some professed Christians and Jews - grossly violate these rules and the fights of others."
Dr. Abbas Barzegar, a professor of religious studies at Georgia State University, agrees. Barzegar reviewed statements from Fakhir and the video of her actions in court. He said the kind of talk displayed is "completely out of step with the the beliefs of the Islamic faith."
"From what I have read and seen, this woman is clearly not familiar with the teachings and the basics of the Islamic faith," Barzegar said. "Instead, they are the words of a person who suffers from some sort of mental issue or is delusional because of the way she speaks of Muslim faith and practices. Much like Christianity, the central idea of Islam is forgiveness, faith and love and abhors extremism, terrorism and this kind of fanaticism.
"It is not indicative of the Muslim faith and a person who speaks like this not a member of the Islamic community and its beliefs."
Barzegar said he hopes people don't hear Fakhir's statements and wrongly condemn those of the Islamic faith
