Might be a retarded question but: Can you have have the engraving on the barrel behind the handguard. Still visible through the holes in the Troy "Battle rail":

Only lower needs to be engraved.

Must be conspicuously engraved, cast or stamped (impressed) on the firearm frame, receiver, barrel or slide

i would engrave the lower really, you may want a 22lr upper on it in the future or other caliber and if you engrave the upper it may limit you only to that upper.

this is true, and some people actually do wear out barrels, that or they changed lengths too.

If I SBR an AR, I am gunna have like 5 uppers of different length and caliber so I would reccomend a lower unless you just know you don't want another caliber or barrel length.
