Building a SBR Regulation Questions

Regardless, the NFA guidelines clearly indicate the barrel is an acceptable place to engrave. It makes no differentiation for different types of rifles, so the fact that an AR barrel can be separated from the lower doesn't matter. Todd from Noveske has confirmed this as well. I wouldn't do it, but someone could if they wanted to.

So read some more of the regulations (27 CFR 479.102) and although I still think the receiver is the safest place to put the engraving, it does seem like, even on an AR, the barrel should be ok. But I still think there is no good reason to do it. I would much rather have the engraving on the receiver where everyone expects it to be. If you have a run in with the ATF or any other LEO, just try arguing the law or regs with them and see how far it gets you. If they think it needs to be on the receiver, they will take the gun and you can hire an attorney for $XXXX to get it back for you.
