Do I have to have a background check if I have a GWL?

Hi guys.

I thought by getting my GWL that i'd avoid background checks when purchasing firearms. Its a hassle and an invasion of privacy imo. Plus.. why did a pay $70 for the thing if not to bypass some hoops to jump through?!

A: You will be required to pass a background check when purchasing a firearm from a dealer. However, if you possess a valid Georgia Weapons License, your Georgia Weapons License will suffice as your background check. You will be required to show your state issued ID and your Georgia Weapons License in order to avoid the background check.



Do I still have to fill anything out when purchasing a firearm?
Or is my GWL and DL enough?

Still have to fill out form 4473, but they don't call in the background check.

You will still fill out a 4473 however instead of calling it in they will simply attach a copy of your GWL to the 4473 and you are on your way.

Ok any special circumstances RE: gun shows? Still have to do the 4473? Going to one this weekend.

if anything i would use it as a haggling tool to talk down the price. they normally tack on the price of a background check to it.

That makes sense... I was just expecting less paperwork post-GWL but it doesn't appear to change.

Maybe no less paperwork, but definitely less hassle and time spent during transactions.
