Sounds like you are referring to HR 218 referring to nation wide LEO carry. A federal law.
You do have to qualify yearly and be actively employed and certified (or retired in good standing). The rest is departmental policy not state or federal law. And not associated with Ga carry laws.

This. The Feds don't care what you carry, but your dept can specify what you carry off duty. If you carry something different, it's not a violation of the law. Of course, you might be out of a job, but that is a different matter...
