Since I am a retired one, let me add...
I don't tell unless they ask, but if you need to go in your console or glove box to get your wallet or registration or anything and you have one in there or if you are wearing one out of sight on the same side as your wallet DEFINITELY tell them that before you go to reaching in there...that's the kind of misunderstanding, that neither of you intended nor wanted.
It's really just common sense.
I've found it really relaxes them to pull over quickly, get out and walk to their window before they get out of the car, whilst shouting "I HAVE A FIREARM!" That way they dont even have to get out of the car to write me the ticket.
Its all about being considerate people.

Every time. When I get pulled over I lower my windows, turn on inside lights (at night), place the vehicle in park, place both my hands where they can be seen (either out the window or on the steering wheel and wait for them to come up before I move.
