dumbed-down schools

I don't think teachers are afraid of choice, vouchers yes. Public schools are pretty strapped for funds. Anything that takes away from that hurts.

Public schools are strapped for funds because they waste most of it

Most schools have more admin people than teachers

Plus when the money goes away so does the student , so the school doesn’t need the money

If half the students left , why would then need the same money ?
They could get rid of half the staff , only buy half as much food etc

And the vouchers and choice seem to work very well with college

Some of the public colleges are the best in the world , but it’s because they have to compete with all the other public colleges and with private colleges too

Imagine how terrible public colleges would be if you could only attend the one in your district , a map drawn up by some bureaucrat whose main Goal is the equal number of blacks and whites attending each school and you would be tossed in jail if you attended any other school other than the one the govt said you were allowed to attend

I think even with vouchers most parents would keep their kids in public schools

People think of schools like congress

Most representatives in Congress are terrible but mine is fantastic

Same with the schools
A lot of the public schools are terrible but the one my kid goes to is fantastic

I agree with some of your premise. Explain when the money goes away, so does the student.

Don’t the schools get the money based on the enrollment?

I’m pretty sure most of the money comes from the state and is based on how many kids are enrolled and attendance

The schools play a lot of shell games with the money
When you ask about their budget they will give you one number
Then when you ask if that’s the final and total they will then say it doesn’t include food service and doesn’t include the cost of the busses and drivers etc

Your county does not want you to know how much they actually spend
Because it’s a lot more than you think and if you knew they spent $14,000 per student per year , you might question why they keep saying they need more and more Money

Most of the teachers actually make pretty good money when all the benefits and retirement are factored in , especially in a rural area

If you’re a teacher in podunk Georgia , you have one of the highest paying jobs for miles around

It’s a crappy job nowadays , mostly due to the lack of student discipline and accountability

When I was in school you could carry a knife , no one cared, but you said yes sir and yes ma’am, and i got a three day in school suspension because a teacher heard me say “damn “

Nowadays , private schools are the only ones with discipline and accountability ,
You cause trouble , you get punished , do it again ,you get expelled .
.
Behavior problems at this school ?
Zero , none .

Get caught cheating on a test , expelled.
Get caught watching porn on your smartphone , expelled .
Etc
Can’t punish kids in a public school nowadays

Problem solved for the teachers AND for the other students that actually want to learn

I think your phrasing needs to be reversed then.

I don't know how state money is divided amongst school systems, but I'm sure it is based on county student populations. My wife briefly taught private school (the money wasn't very good/I'm not sure how many attract good teachers). As you said, a public school teacher does pretty good with benefits.

I've known of many teachers that left the public school system to teach at private schools.
I guess to some, it isn't all about the money.
I attended a private school and we had very good teachers that taught at the same school for well over 20 years.

There is no way I could work in the public school system.

Regardless of how good of a teacher is, they will never be able to teach a rock to read, write, of do arithmetic.

The biggest problem with public schools is the number of students in a single location.

The slow/dumb kids need to attend a school geared for kids looking to make a career out of flipping burgers.

There should be a YDC across the street from every public school.

I think the money is based on attendance , not actual population , but I’m not sure

The private school my kid went to had teachers with actual real world experience

The math teacher was a civil engineer
Art teacher was an architect
Etc

They were great

And yes, private schools don’t pay as much
But most of em don’t have trouble filling positions because there’s little to no discipline problems
Mostly because the parents care about their kids

And the other thing , you got to take an entrance exam , just like at college

If you’re kid is a total idiot and cares nothing about learning ,
they usually don’t get in a private school
