I remember my Dad and Grand dad doing this.

I did this once.
In Boy Scouts, we were shooting targets nailed to a board. One of my bullets hit a nail on the head. Splatter took out half the target.

Actually,, I've heard of Gaussian dispersion, which produces this type result.

no real luck involved if you keep putting bullets downrange.

That's why real students of external ballistics don't accept any sample that doesn't involve 10 events (10 groups). That the lowest limit in round numbers that will produces a statistically valid sample.
