I'm amazed this thread has gone this long without anyone bringing up just how deadly the almighty 22lr is to make the point that "shot placement is everything".

Also, my preferred SD round is the federal HST, and I would argue that their 45ACP reg and +P are better performers than the 40S&W 165 and 180 gr, respectively. The 40 S&W start with a very very slight edge at the muzzle as far as energy, but has a more rapid drop-off over distance. The 45ACP in both loadings start virtually at the same muzzle energy and maintains that energy better. 9mm energy falls off even fast. The 9mm and 40S&W are more velocity dependent.

How far are you planning on shooting someone, defensively, with a pistol, where drop off in velocity is a concern? haha

Saw something earlier about 50yd shooting in competition with a hand gun.

Are we seeing hand gun preferences specifically the caliber changing like from 45ACP to 9mm and 40S&W to 9mm? Or is it from big semi autos to smaller ones?

There are more women than men in the U.S. so this is not surprising.

Most people are keeping their 40's now days because it's the best caliber

40s&w has all the knock down power of the 45fat&slow and all the capacity of the 9small&weak. It's the best of both worlds, the answer to the question everyone was asking. It's popularity will never die!
