Well, if you look at the Israelis, they are a modern society that has to answer this exact question if they want to be armed, and it seems that the Glock 19 reigns supreme.

Yeah, but a very high proportion of their carrying population are poorly-trained or out-of-training civilians who (I think) by law have to carry in condition 3. Under those circumstances, it's hardly surprising that a basic, relatively inexpensive gun that goes bang whenever you squeeze the trigger is going to be popular for a customer base of people who see a firearm *merely* as a tool.
