Is a blackpowder weapon considered a "firearm?"

In the Spirit of the law they should be arresting these reenactors! :becky:

Not true. Federally you can. One of the guys on the alaska shows had a felony so they only ever showed him hunting with black powder. At least that's how it was explained.
States control that. In Georgia, a felon can not own a BP weapon. Air rifle is ok.

O.C.G.A. 16-11-131 (2010)
16-11-131. Possession of firearms by convicted felons and first offender probationers

(a) As used in this Code section, the term:

(1) "Felony" means any offense punishable by imprisonment for a term of one year or more and includes conviction by a court-martial under the Uniform Code of Military Justice for an offense which would constitute a felony under the laws of the United States.

(2) "Firearm" includes any handgun, rifle, shotgun, or other weapon which will or can be converted to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive or electrical charge.

That's what I figured. Most states have their own laws on it. Federally though a felon can own one.

So potatoe guns are out too then?

Pre 1898 is not regulated by BATFE. Muzzleloaders are not considered firearms by the BATFE either. Guns that fire black powder cartridges ARE firearms, unless you can prove they were made before 1898.

Unless you are in California, where a muzzleloader is NOT a firearm until you load it, and then it somehow legally changes it’s classification to be a restricted firearm under state law. I’m not kidding!

a felon or other prohibited person who cannot own firearms can buy a black powder pistol and kit and have it shipped to your door

a single action .44, .41, or .36 is still effective
