Is it legal for a company to require me to surrender my GA DL to gain entry?

I'm a field engineer for a health-care company & the credentialing is getting crazy. One vendor solutions company I've been told is mandatory for me, requires a background check, proof of vaccinations, up to date flu shot, all kinds of skin tests and who knows what else. I have given the information to our legal department to send me in the right direction but as for health-care, this is already in place in more places than not. I'm not having direct patient contact & I'm not selling anything. Having not complied yet, So far my tactic has been 'do you want it fixed'? & 100% of the time they've let me in. They pay big money for service contracts & always want their equipment fixed yesterday. I do understand their concerns about patient care & patient data because a slip up can cost a facility in the millions of dollars not to mention the hit in PR & reputation. I just don't get how they can require me be finger printed & mandate which shots I get.

Getting that way everywhere, Ass covering beauricrats gone wild.

I have to go onto Ft. Benning regularly, and a new policy that has come down states that unless you have a CAC card or get a sponsor to get you a "pass" and escort, you have to go thru a screening and background check, every. single. time. Its insane.

I don't know of any "law" that says a private property owner cannot possess your driver's license for any non-fraudulent use.
Therefore, if it's "legal" for them to hold your driver's license or other I.D. during the duration of your visit, it's legal for them to REQUIRE IT.
It's not bondage, nor kidnapping or false imprisonment, because you are always free to leave the property.
If they won't give it back to you, it's theft. Even if the State of Georgia owns the license, you have a possessory interest in retaining possession of it. That's enough to make it theft if somebody takes it without your consent.

I don't think I'd give my D/L to an $8 an hour security guard who may be an illegal alien from Nigeria or a convicted criminal himself (security guard companies are allowed to hire first and do background checks later), and not knowing how secure or unsecure their storage methods are while they hold that license. If the guard goes to the toilet, are all those visitors' drivers' licenses just sitting on the desk, to be swiped by any passer-by?

I said the same thing to the TSA rent-a-cop at the airport. Now I don't fly. :car:

I am an UPS system Field Engineer, so I work all over the place. Some of the buildings I go to require me to give them my GA Drivers License in order to get a badge and get access to the building. This really bothers me because I do not like handing my personal info over and hoping the security guard is honest. I have also been handed the wrong ID back several times.

I have heard that this is illegal since it is a form on bondage - any truth to that? Please provide opinions or specific references.

You are exchanging your DL for limited access to a company's private property. Surrendering your DL is voluntary, but required for access. Doing this provides the company some assurance you will return the badge/keys you obtained and also maintains a record of who entered the property.

Completely legal and reasonable.

I am in the food industry and this is becoming more and more common. It helps ensure that the company knows who is in the building in case of an emergency. It forces you to check out and they know you are out - because you need to DL back.

I also think it is reasonable to not want to hand a rent-a-cop my license and I generally don't. They can have my business card and if they really, really need a hostage, they can hold a $20 bill.

Capt, it's not your choice whether you will or will not comply with a company's policy when you enter someone else's property. You can choose to walk away, but a business has a right to know who enters their property. The security officer ("rent-a-cop") is just following orders.

If a city/utility worker wanted access to your property you'd ask to see their ID, would you not?
