This is not endemic to just our nation, never was and never will. We are simply repeating the mistakes of nations in the past thousand years.
We were once the most free and powerful nation ever created. Europe sent their scholars here to comprehend why we were handing them their asses in the world economy.
However, when the Republic was first formed, the ink had yet to dry before "we" started turning into a democracy. No true democracy has ever existed much more than 200 years.
There is a non-violent slow process to restore once held rights but it requires one to be more than a passive spectator.
