Shipping firearms

You aren’t telling a lie. Just don’t tell the counter person. I’m an FFL holder. Trust me. I’ve been at it 21 years.

Since you are an FFL, it's a whole different ballgame for you. Your advice doesn't really help since the law is completely different for you... And as as mentioned above, your advice is actually a felony.

Shipping and packaging is going to cost you $25 on handgun and $35 on long gun using ups. FedEx may be a tick cheaper.

Errr.. I'd be surprised, Are you saying you can ship a handgun for $25 as a non-FFL?. Handguns have to go overnight, and both UPS and FedEx will be charging you $50-90 depending on weight.

I've always just shipped guns via a gun store. I shipped my CZ pistol through Adventure Outdoors last year, and I think it was either $25 or $35. For a non-FFL having a gun store do it will almost always be cheaper, unless they are ripping you off.

My recollection is that UPS charges about $60 for a handgun.

My LGS, if I bring a hand gun all boxed, addressed and ready to go, except for final taping, charges me actual postage.

I haven't had any problems either, but I don't be airing out my business a
t the Post Office.
On a rare occasion you will find a postal worker that has knowledge about shipping firearms, but I don't take any chances. I've heard too many horror stories from people just shipping a gun barrel.

Saying gun/firearm in a Post Office, is like saying terrorist of Bomb on a plane. lol

Yep. It seems like the horror stories at USPS always start out "I asked the clerk if I could mail a gun."

The Domestic Mail Manual is online, it's the HOLY BIBLE of the USPS, the regs are clear, and it's easy to search. If there is any doubt in your mind, print out a copy and take it to the PO with you.

The only sort of issue I ever had was when I was shipping 40 lbs of bullets in a fixed rate box, and the clerk ask what in the world did I have in there. When I said "bullets", he said "I don't think you can ship those." I explained that it was only "bullets" and not "loaded ammunition" and he said "o.k. you sure are getting your money's worth." I didn't feel hassled, he did his job and we went our respective ways.

BTW, I should add that if you have something with intrinsic value that insurance will not be adequate recompense for its loss (grandmother's ring) shipping it USPS registered mail is the safest shipping method there is, short of hiring a private courier. It can bet pricey (if you're cheap) but it's the sure thing.

That's because you lucked up and got someone that had at least one eye and a half a brain.
I would have told him lead.
I shipped a bunch trencher teeth in a medium flat rate box, 43 pounds. lol

I had someone ship me a shotgun barrel. He made the mistake of telling the USPS that it was a shotgun barrel.
He said he would never do that again.

There sure is a lot of misinformation and opinions in this thread.

There is no law or rule that says you have to declare what's in the box.

All it takes is 1 damaged box that exposes a gun and your world can turn to poo instantly. Easy isn’t the answer, legal with no questionable practices is the way to go unless you are so intent on saving a few bucks.

Are you under the impression that it's illegal for long guns to be shipped vis USPS from one non FFL holder to another?

I’m not under any impression. I’m saying it’s on the shipper and the receiver to know and follow the law or bad things can happen. Better to be safe than very very sorry.

Do you know the laws pertaining to shipping long guns within the state of Georgia?
