Somehow, I have managed to pick up a virus, ULQ-EXE. Keeps interfering with my computer. Any ideas on an effective spyware removal tool? Preferably free. Have tried to donwload a couple but they will not run. I think the virus is stopping them from the start. Maybe an on-line version? Thanks.

superantispyware might do it but most viruses these days take ADMIN control of your operating system and do not allow installation of antidotes if they require a path in the system registry. In lay terms if you cannot add a file to the registry you are fokked for the most part.

If this is the case you can try a portable anti virus tool (does not require ADMIN privs to run as it does not write to the registry). Here is a link to several applications that are free on CNet...

I hope you have backup.

My tech guy http://techguylabs.com/

says that you can never really be sure these viruses are cleaned up. You can type "mrt" in the search field by the start button (if you are using windows.) This will run microsoft's malicious removal tool. It might work.
Bottom line-according to Leo- is that even an expert can't totally remove the real nasty viruses these days. The just embed into everything.

He always says that you should do a reformat and reinstall from a known good source. If you have your data backed up, this ain't as hard as it sounds. If your data is not backed up, you probably are hosed.

I use this or backup http://www.carbonite.com/en/

it runs in the background, and does an awesome job. I have restored from it before.

-Good luck.

Wow! Spybot wouldn't get-r-done? It's always wortked for me.

Lately, my ODT is slowed down on my desktop and laptop. Well, when I use the down key or click in the scroll bar it steps down in increments. I thought I had mal-ware but all my scans are clean now so I have no idea what's wrong.
