Why do folks put scopes on their deer hunting rifles?

Does anybody remember the thread awhile back where the guy was talking about "unloading into the bushes" if he heard a deer?

Definitely helps to see what the hell that is out there at 400 yards. If you can tell the difference between a doe or a button buck at that distance, you've got much better eyesight than I do (and I have 20/15 vision). Also more precise shots make for a more humane kill - at least for me it does.

You guys must be teenagers.. My 62 year old eyes cant focus on iron sights and a target. I can do one or the other hence a scoped rifle me. And yes I have taken groundhogs in excess of 600 yards.

This mounted on either the 220 Swift or the 22-250 Prairie dogs fear me ...

If you point a gun at an "intruder" that turns out to be your son are you not breaking the rules?

Yes, that is breaking a rule. Be sure of your target.
I can't tell who's serious and who's not in this thread anymore.

All guns are always loaded.
Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

I often wondered what the significance to having a scope on a rifle that you intend on shooting a large animal in the side with it anyway.
Wouldn't it be easier to skip the scope cost and the sighting, and just shoot the deer in it's side using iron sights?

I really thought this was a trick question from the start
