I went through Hurricane Hugo in Charleston in 1989. No power or water for over a month. I did pretty well because I was used to living in a no power or running water situation, but others went crazy. When a reporter asked the police chief what they should do if confronted by looters, he said to shoot them. It was a wake up call for me to exactly how fragile our society is when confronted with extreme adversity. On the flip side, 90% of the community pulled together and helped each other out. Black, white, rich, poor, liberal, conservative...it didn't matter anymore.

Water will be of the utmost importance. With modern technology there isn't much excuse to not have one of these at the very least. I recommend 2 or more. Purifies 4,755 gallons of water without any iodine, chlorine, or any other purifying chemicals. Water for a family of four for about 3 years, and these only cost around $65...Life straw family.

I would also recommend not wasting money on MRE's...They are way overpriced for very little lasting effect. I also recommend having cans and jars and a stockpile of heirloom seeds. For true long term prepping, seeds are the way. A decent short article.

And just for ****s and giggles, the original MRE. Recipe for pemmican:

It was when the Boston bomber was loose and they were going door to door ripping people out of their houses and pointing guns at everyone. Google image search it, the pictures are incredible.
