I like the .40's combination of good velocity (over 1100 fps) with bigger, heavier bullets that drive deeper than the 115/ 124 grain 9mm bullets.
The .45 is certainly big enough, but they're so fat that ammo capacity is limited, and double-stack magazines make for guns with fat grips.
I have no ballistic preference between the .40 and the .357 Sig, but for ammo cost and availability, I'd go with the .40
HOWEVER, in a subcompact concealed-carry gun, I prefer the 9mm due to lower recoil and better rapid-fire groups.
In a duty-sized or "home defense" pistol, I think the .40 is better.
