.40, why/why not?

I like the .40's combination of good velocity (over 1100 fps) with bigger, heavier bullets that drive deeper than the 115/ 124 grain 9mm bullets.
The .45 is certainly big enough, but they're so fat that ammo capacity is limited, and double-stack magazines make for guns with fat grips.
I have no ballistic preference between the .40 and the .357 Sig, but for ammo cost and availability, I'd go with the .40

HOWEVER, in a subcompact concealed-carry gun, I prefer the 9mm due to lower recoil and better rapid-fire groups.
In a duty-sized or "home defense" pistol, I think the .40 is better.

Definitely a bigger gun helps a lot, since some of drawbacks of the 40 aren't so apparent. The capacity argument is less critical, and the extra size and weight mitigates some of the recoil and gives a lot more grip area to help control it for follow-ups.

me too

im trying to downsize

uhhh, i dropped all my .380 and then i pick up a cz82 in 9x18 mak......wtf was i thinking?

Don't fight it... Being a caliber-slut is perfectly acceptable these days.

Yeah but as you may recall in another thread about Likes and New Years Resolutions I told myself I would stop selling and trading and only buy what I really NEED. Your CZ falls into the really really WANT column.

Now as far as the 40 subject goes I'm reminded that last week my good friend from Macon came down here and he brought 3 boxes of range ammo in 40. He's with the Mercer University Campus PD and responsible for getting / keeping everyone qualified. They use Glocks of course like every other department. But they will be going back to 9mm probably this year. So they gave him this 40 ammo to use up and he tried to give it to me. I told him " No I don't own a 40 and never have. Don't give me an excuse to get one. " Well the official story with the Mercer PD and I suspect soon to be the Macon PD switching back to 9mm is all about ammo cost. 9mm is just cheaper and probably always will be. And that's really it. Ammo cost is what it's all about with severe agencies.
