Can we come to some sort of mutual agreement on this?

It appears that there were 883,600 police officers in 2008. http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos160.htm

140 police officers were killed in the line of duty. http://ohsonline.com/articles/2008/...-officers-killed-in-line-of-duty-in-2008.aspx NOT all of these were by "perps".

In 2007 there were 398 justifiable homicides by police. http://www.policeone.com/legal/articles/2059075-Reviewing-and-analyzing-police-use-of-deadly-force/

I tried to locate some kind of number for the number of officers fired for misconduct but wasn't able to find anything.

I have 2 comments.

1. If we don't post it on the ODT it didn't happen?
2. We need to be aware of our surroundings, protect our rights and "call out" ill-doers. If we (the public) don't, who will?

i also think some folks just hate authority figures. always trying to show THE MAN is out to get you. most leo are good people. i'm more worried about our politicians than leo.

We need to worry about them both because they both have a significant amount of power to ruin peoples lives.

The good ones are good and the bad ones are bad. No doubt.

I have several friends who are cops, and I would gladly trust any one of them with my life. But on the other hand, they will also be the first to admit that there are bad apples in every department.

They have also told me that they are a citizen first and a cop second. If they were ever ordered to do something that went against their own morals (such as confiscating firearms from the general public) they would immediately turn in their badge.

I think lowering the job requirements has some bearing... How can we the public allow officers hired with criminal history, be it shoplifting, pot smoking, car theft, battery charges, go on to be hired? How can an officer enforce laws he/she has violated? Maybe I`m just too old school....

Yep, agree with ya.

I'm glad you agree. I can't even understand what he was trying to say. I seem to remember something called punctuation which, as I recall, was once commonly used to make jumbles of words into legible sentences. Sometimes we even spelled words correctly back then.

As I said before, I support our troops in what they do, and would like to thank your son for what he does, but the biggest point of what I wanted to say is that too many people forget our "Frontline" heroes..IT's not just the Leos, It's the firemen, emt, and other emergency aid departments that defend our ability to enjoy our freedom. Our soldiers can fight for our freedom all they want, but if there's nobody to protect the citizens of this country from the perrils of those who try to endanger our life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness.

I get what you're saying, I make a point to thank all our front line first responders every chance I get. I interact with LEO's on a daily basis where I work and know alot of firefighters and EMTs also.

As far as war goes, the soldiers are doing what they are paid to do and many are in service because its the only job they can find.

As far as this statement goes.......My Son knew from an early age what he wanted to do, and that was to JOIN the United States Air Force. He is very intelligent and could have done anything he wanted to, he made Staff Sergeant in three years which is about half the time of most other Airmen and will most likely be promoted to Tech Sergeant before his six year enlistment is reached. You can't be average or stupid and do that.

I agree with you. We should post these situation and we do need to keep track of what's going on. The worst thing we could do is keep our head in the sand. What I object to is the assumption that so many on here obviously have. They believe a bad LEO is common and all LEO should be condemned. The truth is that a bad LEO is very rare and most of the time is rooted out by their fellow officers. If there is anything that tries to keep them on the force, it's the unions. Just like bad teachers.
