Yes they can check your status, I had this happen to me the last gun I bought from Walmart. It could be a backlog from Christmas sales.
WM has their own policies. They won’t proceed after 3 days like a gun store usually will
They still do a check with a carry permit.
I have been delayed there and went somewhere else that day and also got a delay.

Just give it a little time, like most folks have said, they don’t hire rocket surgeons. And they are overworked and under paid. Plus you don’t speak to the same person whenever you call, probably
Update!!! Stopped by this afternoon, spoke with a great manager in the firearms dept, he checked on my nics for me. What do ya know, a proceed! Got my gun and some beer (‘MERICA)
Moral of the story, if I’m going to Walmart I will prequalify the sales associate before proceeding. Haha
