No one said they won't..... I can dig a pool with a shovel. That doesn't mean I won't use a backhoe if it's available.

At one point in time, the largest elk taken at that time by an individual human was taken with a flint-tipped arrow or spear. Doesn’t mean that we should go out and do the same when better tools are available.

I’m going on my first elk hunt in MT later this year. I’ll be using a iron-sighted 1942 Winchester 71 in .348 Winchester. That’s moot to this discussion, as that’s not what the OP is asking.

I’d stick with wm. Or a 28 nosler. After that I’d go 30-06, the 300wsm

Or I’d go with this extreme weather ss winchester model 70 in the elk slaughtering 325wsm. Light but shootable, deadly accurate & looks to boot. Seems like a premier option for a elk rifle

Since OP has already decided, I will add. I wonder about certain hunting cartridges dying out. 7mm rem mag is surprising to me. Seems like it was viewed as “ideal” out West for some time. Now, looks like it’s going away.

I’ll bet the 7mag ends up going away with new 7prc.

I have to laugh- when this thread started I was going to suggest a 348 (tongue in cheek) and be done. Worked for my grandfather and it’ll eventually work for me.
