My 9mm AR runs just fine with or without a can.
With a 10.5" barrel it's a bit big for a 9mm, but still light and handy.
It would probably be a lot more practical with a shorter barrel and without the fixed irons, but I'm quite happy with it.
Incidentally, with a 16" barrel it may be possible to shoot through level 3a armor with 9mm.
