What did you do to better your prep today?

Only two legs I gots is da ones I'm going to be making the 2 mile round trip hike to the lake for water with if it comes to it. ;)

Is it really economical as compared to canned goods in the store? I understand as a skill for if canned goods are not accessible after SHTF, but for now isn't it still cheaper to buy cans than to buy food and can it? Or even cheaper overall than growing and canning your own?

KInd of like reloading after initial investment it's very economical, prime example dove hunting this weekend found three pear trees loaded. I asked farmer he said take alle you want. Wife canned 30 quarts of pears between Sunday and Monday. My cost was minimal only bought sugar already had jars pears were free.

VERY nice! Heck with the doves, GRATS on the pears! ;)

I've been watching a small sample of formerly-frozen peas and green beans that I dehyrated a couple of months ago and vac-sealed in a pint Mason jar. So far, so good. No mold or other signs of spoilage. I guess the real test is to see if it's edible after it's reconstituted.

If all goes well, my plan is to buy larger amounts of frozen veggies, dehydrate the heck out of them, and vac seal them for preservation. This will give an alternate mid-term to long-term storage method that doesn't require freezing or pressure canning.

I plan on trying carrots, sqash, etc...that hopefully will provide alternatives to just dried store-bought beans and 15 bean soup!! I love beans but hey, there's only so many ways you can serve 'em up !! LOL

Laid in another 20 lbs of rice. WalMart has had Libby's canned corn, peas and green beans in a 4pack for $2.50. Just as I was walking into the food clearance aisle the lady working there was finishing marking them to $2.00 per 4-pack. So I loaded the cart with all the corn and beans and most of the peas. Expiration(well best by) date is Dec, 15 so I should be good on them for a while.

Also at Walmart the nice folks in the bakery were kind enough to give me 6 or 7 of the plastic icing buckets. These are rectangular instead of round so when the rice is vad-sealed into little bricks it fits better in the rectangular buckets.

Found a minor plus to my diabetes. Test strip packets look like old style film canisters from 35MM cameras but they have a flip top and are air/water proof. They make fantastic match holders and hold about 1.5 boxes of kitchen matches and a couple of striker panels from the box.

Also laid in another 10 ounces of silver US coins.

This afternoon, I reorganized my tools and stuff and cleaned up my workbench area....The other day at a variety store, I found a lantern top that fits a Mason jar. I bought that and a frosted, glass globe for it for 15 bucks.
