It’s sort of the main event in The Bonfire of the Vanities, which is a good book and a terrible movie.

I see it differently. This was a wannabe gangbanger, possibly "crip", dropped off on the side of the road in a nice neighborhood for who knows what. Nothing good. Don't know what he threw at your truck or why but you're lucky that 3 or 4 more weren't hiding in the weeds on the other side of the road. The angel you mentioned made you go back to your truck and press check your handgun. We all need to be more vigilant.
