As I age, gracefully I might ad..., I noticed that it takes more practice under varied circumstances to keep my skill level up.

I think dryfire combined with occasional calibration checks work pretty good for practice. That being said, I shot for almost 40 years before I learned how much I sucked in a 3 gun match. I learned more in 150 rounds than I had my whole life. Now matches are really the only time I shoot.
