Hey guys,

I think I want to give competitive shooting a try and looking for some basic information. I would probably go to Sharpshooters or Norcross Gun club since they are the closest according to www.gadpa.com. The site says to "show up thirty minutes early." It appears that 50-100 rounds is all that is needed? I assumed you would need more and I would bring a few hundred rounds with me anyway. What are any membership/competition/registration fees in addition to range time? Any of you guys shoot IDPA matches in the Atlanta area? Anything else I should know?

Thanks

Usually your first match is free and you don't have to join anything. I usually take about one and a half times the recommended ammo, so I would take 150 to that match. Call the clubs and find out who is running the match and call them. You will have a blast.

-snip- or Norcross Gun

The matches at Norcross are GADPA not IDPA. The guys running it at Norcross broke away from IDPA specifically. It is the GA Defensive Pistol Association. You do not need to be a member of GADPA to shoot, though it is much appreciated if you do join them. The fees only cover things like targets, etc. Norcross charges $15 dollars to shoot the match if you're not a member of the range. It is $10 dollars to shoot the matches if you are a member. Norcross Gun Club only serves as the venue. The matches themselves are organized by GADPA. Matches take place every Wednesday around 6 pm. There are generally 3 - 8 courses of fire depending on turn out.

Sharpshooters, sandy springs, ga firing line and norcross are gadpa matches. If you want to shoot idpa youll have to go to governors, adventure outdoors, trading place, Stoddards or Cherokee gun club to do so. Don't forget your "concealment" garment!

If you like to shoot you will enjoy the friendly competition. There is also a shoot at Harrellson County Youth Range fourth Saturday of every month. This is an outdoor shoot so dress according to weather.

If you want to try IDPA, South River Gun Club has monthly matches. This is an outdoor range. You can look it up on their website for the schedule and contact information.

Ah, thanks guys. When googling IDPA Atlanta, the GDPA website is the first in the search results. Do you guys have a preference between the two?

Since (AFAIK) GADPA has not published a rule book, the matches are still run along IDPA lines and provide the same opportunity to practice dynamically with a concealed handgun. I've shot at several of the indoor matches around town and have found all of them welcome new shooters. As a new shooter the best advice I got was to take it slow and concentrate on safety and good hits. As you become more familiar with moving and shooting you can work on getting faster. Yeah, I laughed when I read that.
