You still do at certain places, though around these parts I usually see the minimum as $2-3 on Debit/Credit and some only charge on Debit only.

I just use my credit card because it's cash back and cash back is more money in my pocket. A new AMEX card netted me over $100 in cash back after my first few months of using it due to a bonus they handed out. Pretty damn good alternative to cash ... if you can be responsible with your money.
