I have an l1a1 and is very pleasant to shoot. recently picked up a m1a socom but have not had it out yet. im saving my pennies for a scout/squad m1a.

PTR-91 has the advantage of being a simple design and it still has cheap 20rd mags. Used to have a lot of them. Bad side is ruins brass if you reload. Plus the left side charging handle & no bolt hold open were hard for me to get used to. Still like them a lot though. You see them in service around the world - I'd guess they are outlasting the FAL.

M1A is also a fine choice - classic lines and a rugged design that just works well.

Also a fan of the FAL. It's probably the better overall design - the way it opens up for take down was always pretty clever to me.

Nothing wrong with the standard M1 either. You give up some ammo capacity and they aren't light, but it's a fine rifle all around.
