Firearm restrictions are not about "public safety" or "common sense", except in the context that "common sense" dictates it is much easier to excercise control over a population when you have them hopelessly outgunned.
Since 1934 we have witnessed a systematic disarmament of the American citizen. Every class of weapon outlawed, every importation ban, every mag capacity limit, every "non-sporting feature" has been another step along that path.
We now find ourselves in a position where the gap in capabilities between the citizenry and the state has grown so vast as to render the 2nd amendment largely moot in its role as a safeguard against tyranny.
I find it hard to believe this is merely a consequence of misguided attempts at "crime prevention".....
