Nothing like being fired for defending yourself

He wasn't fired for defending himself. He was suspended for bringing a gun to work, something he is not contractually allowed to do.
 
I can't fault for the store for doing this because they open themselves up to litigation if they do not follow their policy.

I can, however, fault the store for either not providing their employees with protection or allowing them to protect themselves because they are working in a high risk environment - ie. change the damn policy...

Yup, put up some safety glass so he can at least stay out of harms way.
He was in his right to shoot, Mr. Robber should consider himself lucky.
