With the standard 4-round mag, it's purely a hunting gun.

But put an aftermarket 10-round mag in it, and add some camo tape or a gun sock to hide the glossy "LOOK AT ME: I"M SO BEAUTIFUL" finish, then you have something you can use for tactical work, too.

Since you did say "need" I would go with that ruger 10/22. You can put a lot of food on the table in bad times and if you have to use it for defense it hurts when shot by one.
