I never ask someone to hold an item. If I can't buy it then, I don't need it. There has been a time or two when scheduling prevented me for a day or so, but I will never ask someone to hold it. And if someone volunteers to hold it for me, I will not keep them waiting more than two days. That's my code and I'm sticking to it.
