Like a dummy I've done this. The hammer falls down into the trigger group. You can stick your finger in there and lock the hammer back.

I put the safety on just in case 'cause I wasn't sure what it would do...could that cause something like what is happening with his?

Absolutely. That's what's happening if he pulls the trigger and nothing happens. No click no nothing. If he hears a click then it's something else

Does the gun make a clicking noise when you pull the trigger or is the trigger just dead? Does nothing.

The same thing happened to mine when I broke it down, I had to disassemble, then when you take the bolt out, you have to stick something down the tube to reset the hammer. It was on a youtube video, I will look for it and PM the link in the a.m. If that doesn't work, I'd call the guy you traded and see if he knows how this happened.
