Remember when connecting to the Internet...

Like starting up your computer 30 years ago:
1. Press start button
2. Go make a pot of coffee
3. Drink 2 cups of coffee while computer "boots up"
4. Enter log in data
5. Drink 2 more cups of coffee while log in starts
6. Open first application
7. Go use the bathroom while first application opens
8. Try to connect with internet via 56K modem ("oooooo, 56K!")
9. Make breakfast and eat it while modem goes through multiple attempts to connect.
10. See how much your AOL stock is worth!

You forgot 7a. Make sure no one is on the phone!
 
To pul a credit bureau on a teletype machine, we had to dial the rotary phone, after the computer answered we then then place the handset into a coupler.

Starting your computer 40 years ago:
1. Insert DOS floppy.
2. Turn on computer.
3. Wait for BIOS to boot.
4. Wait for DOS to boot.
5. Insert application floppy.
6. Start application.
7. Wait for application to start.
8. Insert DOS floppy when prompted.
9. Insert application floppy when prompted.
10. Repeat 8 & 9 for as long as you're using your computer.
 
Right around 1987, my first job out of college was working on a low res simulation for the Army Research Institute at Fort Knox called Platoon Leader Battlefield Simulation.

Most of the development team was in Leavenworth, KS.

As I remember, we used a Hayes 2400 baud modem to transfer files between those locatiions. We thought that was blazing fast back then. :)
