I guess I'll throw my .02 in as a life long Ford truck owner. I've owned 2 F150 5.4 Tritons( 2005, 2010) an 06 6.0 Powerstroke, and now a 2013 3.5 Ecoboost. I test drove the 5.0 Coyote before I bought the Eco. I absolutely love my 2013. I have just under 100k trouble free miles. I've had to change plugs and a water pump so far, and of course the usual stuff like battery. Other than that no issues, no turbo problems or anything like that. The key is taking care of them and routine maintenance which on the Ecoboost involves more frequent plug changes than the standard 100k miles. I beat the crap out of my truck too, no grandpa driving it here.
First off to those who keeps saying no replacement for displacement. That's some old school thinking that doesn't apply especially to turbocharged engines. My 3.5 has some serious torque. It's ridiculous. Pulling a trailer is cake compared to both my old 5.4 Tritons. It beats that motor hands down and spanks it off the line and in gas mileage as well.
However, what others have said, the 3.5 Ecoboosts are misleading on gas mileage compared to the new 5.0 Coyote motors. I get the same mileage as my buddy with an identical optioned truck with the 5.0.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy either the 5.0 or 3.5 Eco. Not sure about the new diesel yet as others have said as it may need more time to see any issues in reliability. I will say this though, the only truck I've had more fun driving than my Ecoboost was the old 6.0 PSD but that thing was tuned and bulletproofed. There is just something about those sweet turbos...
