U2 out of Robins AFB?

I hoofed it into a closed-door maintenance hangar somewhere in South Carolina back in the late 80's and there sat a U2 in some state of being worked on/maintained. I couldn't believe they were still using them then! It was pretty cool to check out up close. Very little room inside them.

Yep except with drop tanks

That's about right. I spent a night guarding a TR1 in 1983 when it was stopped at Ramstien for an airshow.
I met the crew chief and he spent about an hour with me talking about the plane.
At the time, the TR1 had replaced the U2 as the predominant reconnaissance aircraft.
I don't know what the surface of that aircraft is covered with, but it was very black and strange looking. I mean, your eyes saw it and said, "Man that's strange looking."
But anyway, here's the Wiki article. :)

I was stationed at Sembach, AFB 1978-1981.
Found out a few weeks back from a family friend that works on base that around the same time there was one that flew into Robins for avionics work.
