I've told my wife and daughter for years the most important thing they can do to ensure their safety when out and about is indeed this. Be aware of what is going on around you.
As long as you let slimy self serving ambulance chasers run the government, this stuff will happen.
3 strikes you're out for any crime with a victim, would solve 90% of the crime problem.
People are stupid...Especially in California.
The sole reason vigilantes are villainized, is to perpetuate the law profession.
In a perfect world, criminals would be dealt with by the community. The public could choose to incarcerate permanently, or exterminate criminals in the community. If that was allowed, you could pretty much guarantee crime would decrease dramatically. As it is, the repeat capture, processing and release of criminals only serves to create work for lawyers, cops and insurance companies at the expense of the people.

Excellent post, agree 100%.
I understand the sentiment, but the last people I would want to decide whether I had committed a crime and then what the punishment should be is my neighbors. We already have the laws on the books, we just need to enforce them. No more BS bargains with the DA and a sentence less than the max should be the exception, not the rule. OH yeah, screw early release for good behavior.
You did not even mention the privatized prison system.
To bad he wasn't armed, might have ended differently!
