Do you pass on a good deal if it requires a Bill of Sale?

I do not mind educating a newbie. Truth be told, the first time I did a private firearm sale many, many years ago, I did a BOS. Once I did the research and learned what a colossal waste of time it was, I never did it again, and I keep that BOS as a reminder of my ignorance. Plus I have had to deal with identity fraud issues so I would never chance it anyway.

It's the people that should know better that I have a problem with. At some point ignorance becomes stupidity.
Thanks for taking some time to try and clarify some things. I want to list a firearm for sale on ODT but wasn't sure on how to address this issue. Again, thanks and I'm sure I'm not the only one to benefit from the additional info.

Sorry if this seems rude but I think most of us are just completely sick and damn tired of educating every BoS thumper that signs up today and can't operate a search feature to actually READ one of the 50 threads already on here about how useless and stupid BoS's are. Just make sure you mark in youyr sale ad that you want a BoS so I can ignore you and never accidentally waste my time on you. And be damn careful you don't surprise someone with a BoS demand at the trade after not making it known up front that you want one. The deal will NOT happen, there will be some hot words at the sight and you WILL get negative feedback.

Cool, more info. Thanks for posting the links.

I have no problem showing my DL to verify age and residency, and maybe a simple name and phone number, maybe. The one's that kill me are the ones that require a DL# and address, or copy of DL and copy of weapons permit. There was a post the other day that said, " It was sold, but I had to bail on a deal because the guy was shady, I mean, he didn't even want me to have a copy of his DL or give me his address." I replied that he could call me shady as well. In no way was I going to give a total stranger the directions on how to get my my wife and daughter sleep or where to come 'get his gun back', for a 5 finger discount. If it's an FFL, I don't mind at all.

If this was sprung on me at the last moment, and ask them to excuse me for a second, and run and get them a stool sample.

or maybe start meeting next to a cow pasture, so I can hop the fence and bring back a nice patty, and when that ask what it is, I'll say, "The same thing you just pulled, bull$hit"

NO..I will not pass up a "deal",but I don't give out any #'s/address/etc! Newby to the ODT here..but no newby to buying/selling. I have NO problem with a BOS..I expect to sign one(for a firearm)..and expect a buyer to sign one(Signature only). I look at GADL at a minimum & I will have their cell#. That's all I ask for & all that is needed if there's a problem down the road. LEO can get all they need from that cell# & it's more than required by law. I did jot down a vehicle description+ tag# once...just because of the way they acted & how fast they wanted to leave! Call me what you want...but possessing(knowingly..or not) a shady/stolen firearm, that may have been involved in a crime/murder...and having NO documentation of who you got it from is just...DUMB..to put it mildly! Yeah it would be pretty dumb to knowingly a possess a stolen firearm. Not sure what a shady firearm is unless it is one that has spent its life under the shade of a tree and/or umbrella.

If you are in possession of stolen firearm unknowingly that little piece of paper, that is easily forged and/or made up, will do absolutely nothing to protect you. There is still something called a burden of proof, and they would have to prove you knowingly purchased a stolen firearm or used it in a crime.

Once again if you are truly that paranoid, do your transaction through an FFL because what's really DUMB is wasting your time scrawling a name and signature on a little piece of paper...

I've been hit with the surprise BOS a couple of times, I would prefer it buyer/seller let me know ahead of time so it wasn't a surprise but I really don't mind if it makes them feel better.

That being said I would buy if it was cheaper but had Bos requirement.

I did recently list a couple guns for sale and asked for a BOS - and initially for a copy of their GWL. Once i got flamed for that (ahem), i did explain i wanted to SEE the GWL to make sure someone had passed a background - my comfort level.

Both buyers signed a BOS with the guns serial number and their name - no issues - they both thought it was a good idea. We signed 2 BOS, we each got a copy.

They both let me look at their GWL and DL.

I did refuse to sell to someone that did not have their GWL - they even suggested a friend with a GWL could buy it...and then......umm, no.

No issues, guns sold fast - your mileage may vary......

My first buy had a BOS sprung on me. I was foolish enough to let him take a picture of my DL. Fortunately he let me take one of his also. Guess what...I was the victim of credit fraud about 6 months after the purchase and the only way the guy was caught was because I told the authorities about the transaction. Never ever ever ever again will I allow someone a copy of my information. You see my DL to see I am of age and a resident of GA. That is it. The end for me.
