Gary Martin lived and worked in Illinois. Illinois has some of the strictest statewide laws on citizens purchasing guns. To purchase a gun, an Illinois citizen has to have a FOID - firearm owners identification card. To obtain one, you have to go through an intensive background check.

I'm not sure, but you may have to have a card to purchase ammunition too.

Gary Martin obtained a FOID in January, 2014 after undergoing the State of Illinois rigorous background check. Gary Martin used his FOID to purchase a S&W semi-automatic pistol on March 11, 2014.

Gary Martin was a convicted felon, being convicted of a felony in Mississippi in 1995.

On March 16, 2014, Gary Martin applied for a concealed weapons permit. This process uses digital fingerprinting, and the felony conviction was discovered. His application was denied and his FOID was revoked. NO ONE THOUGHT TO TRACK DOWN THE GUN.

Yesterday (Friday), Gary Martin took the pistol he should have never been able to purchase, and which the State of Illinois has known for 5 years that he owned to work, and killed 5 co-workers, including a college intern on his first day on the job.

We will probably hear about the need for more gun control because of this incident. What's important is that unlike so many cases, the information that would have prevented him from buying a gun legally was "in the system" and the Illinois bureaucracy dropped the ball.

He was able to buy the Smith and Wesson .40-caliber handgun he used in the attack because an initial background check didn't catch that he had a prior felony conviction in Mississippi, the chief said. Martin was issued a firearm owner's identification card in January of 2014 after he passed the initial background check and he bought the gun that March 11.

Great... More gun control lobbying from the left... Here they come. Even then, this still proves that more legislative measures for gun control are pointless.

You’re right! There were laws in place to prevent this scumbag from owning a firearm, and they didn’t enforce them. The liberal answer to their failures here will be more gun laws. They don’t enforce the ones we have! The incompetence of our nation’s “leaders” is outrageous.
