You can dial a 1-8x optic down to 4x, but you can’t dial a 1-4x up to 8x. As long as I still have a decent bottom end, I’ve never regretted going for more power at the top end.

I like my Burris MTAC 1-4. Daylight bright illumination and decent glass with a 1x bottom power.

This mindset is why I went with a Trijicon 1-8. 1x is as close as true 1x as I have seen in a variable.
But it's well north of your price point.
