Your memory is flawed. I think I'm older than you and clearly remember seeing contrails in my youth. Ones that acted exactly like the ones today.

There are a few people here that remind me of a guy I was in a deer club with once. He absolutely new the truth of everything and would get pissed if you tried to tell him things like, "A Cottonmouth and a Copperhead are not the same species of snake." Us city folks just didn't know nothing!
