You got an indirect strike. Most of the energy went to (or from) ground elsewhere, but you were part of the circuit. The next strike in a similar situation is just as likely to literally blow your shows off and burn your feet, or worse.

We had a barbed wire fence get hit once. The strike found a ground where we had a metal fence chained to a post where the wire wrapped around the post and was touching the chain. The chain welded solid from the hit, every link was welded to the next.

It hit my mule once and really messed up his feet. He is rather nervous now when he hear thunder.
